In front of my computer, my hands started digiting nervously names of websites to check on flights and hotels. Until, I felt my stomach tighten while my mind woke up from an uncomfortable nightmare.
Therefore, I turned off my computer and sighed:
“I really wish I could travel from home”
Abstinence.
The condition of sacrifice imposed by the circumstance in order to protect our health, an absence causing a physiological sense of suffering.
Yes, I miss travelling. The sense of freedom. Going out from my home.
Our home became our daily trip.
Lonely Planet affirmited it first, promoting an ironic new travel guide “Home”. Insightful, tolerant and welcoming.
Let’s try turning our four walls into our place of adventures teasing our five senses.
Taste. When we go out for groceries, let’s buy more than the usual pasta or frozen food. Let’s buy something new, a captivating journey through flavours. Whether a Moroccan cous-cous, some Spanish tapas or a fish tartare with vegetables turning into a typical South-American ceviche.
Then smell. Let’s fill our home with perfumes recalling our past journeys or the one we want to go for in the future. For instance, the scent of pine in a hot bath from a mountain spa, an aromatic tea that takes us back to the East, or the lavander scent of the open-air expanses.
And now fantasy, because our home can turn into a land to explore, above all for the little ones. Obstacle courses, hidden treasures, like “mini Indiana Jones” climbing on the arduous slopes of the couch, crossing dark tunnels under the chairs, navigating obstacle trials along the hallway to reach the so much desired award – maybe a snack?
Last but not least, our memories, because our autobiographical memory can turn into an exceptional journey. Get those pictures of your past journeys and select the most beautiful to create an album of pleasant and fulfilling memories, a reminder of what traveling means to us.
“Climb on the Couch Mountains, dive into the wild Ice-Cold Shower and try the Whateveryoucanfindinthefridge street food. It is time to enjoy a magical place like you never did before: it is time to stay home. #imstayinghome”
Right now, when every country is in lockdown, books are our perfect escape route to travel nourishing our need of freedom, knowledge and discovery. Every journey starts before leaving and other people’s stories are our first step. In fact, books allow us to travel with our mind and to feel part of a place even before going there.
Let’s start with our favourite book and let’s leaf through it. First, some words, then a chapter, then two, we will freeze time while the author will take us by hand in the maze of his story. The best way to spend our time, nourishing our hunger for emancipation.
Technology is our ally. Thoughout my job, I help people overcome their fears of traveling. The first step together is to wear Virtual Reality.
Today, traveling with Virtual reality can be helpful in order to discover details of the World we want to see, while waiting impatiently to touch them for real. And it is ok, if you do not have and headset like mine!
AirBnB recently launched a set of experiences in Virtual Reality to connect people around the World and to share numerous activities, from a dinner with a Moroccan family to meditation with a Buddhist monk, from dance to cooking lessons.
From Explore, it is possible to get access to some live cameras around the World. My favourite section, “Africa”, allows to observe wild animals from the comfort of your own home, while waiting to get on a jeep in the Savannah.
Even art opens the virtual doors of some of the most beautiful museums in the World, such as the Louvre in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Van Gogh Museum of Amsterdam, The State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Vatican Museums in Rome.
And finally, our beloved Italy. Google Arts & Cultures created a page about culture where to get lost inside the beauty of this country.
Enthusiasm.
And now, that we appease our abstinence, let’s sit down and choose how to travel from home. Tell me,
Where shall we go next?
